TIRE TRAUMA: With few exceptions, every tire that is bought in Louisiana comes with a fee, from $2.25 to $10, to ensure it is recycled. Yet more than 33,000 old tires were piled into unsanctioned dumps in New Orleans East, 100,000 waste tires burning in Cottonport forced a prison evacuation and tens of millions of chopped-up tires were stuffed underground in Scott, caught fire and smoldered for four years. Clearly, fees alone are not the solution. AIRBN-BEGONE: The New Orleans City Council has significantly tightened its temporary moratorium on residential short-term rental permits, issuing a total ban that includes renewals of existing permits and those already in the application pipeline. POACHING: A longtime contractor has terminated its agreement with the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office to provide technology services, after the agency began hiring the firm’s employees as part of a move to do the work in house. The company, Major Services Inc., has political ties to former Sheriff Marlin Gusman, and bailed out 3½ months into the administration of Sheriff Susan Hutson, who ousted Gusman.
