“Philomath” is as much a portrait of the logging town, Philomath, Oregon, in which I grew up, as it is a portrait of a friendship, a family, and a state of being. “Philomath” literally means “a lover of learning” in Greek, but the town defines its name (at least in public signage) as meaning “love of learning.” I relish the slippage there, between action and identity, “love” and “lover.” Devon Walker-Figueroa on "Philomath" |
