"Most of Refusenik was written from 2017 to 2018. And then I put it down. And I decided I was just going to write about Dolly Parton for all of 2019. I tweeted out my intention: what if I do this? And I did. I started writing about Dolly, but I didn’t know what format it was going to take. I certainly didn’t think it was going to be a memoir. I thought maybe it would be poems. Maybe essays."
