"My biggest fear was if this video got out, I would just—suicide went through my mind, you know—I was in absolute shock—a state of absolute fear and anger—I was so angry at myself.”—Anonymous Child Survivor of Sextortion

John, June is Internet Safety Month, and I want you to know that while internet crimes against children may occur virtually, the psychological, emotional, and physical consequences are real and traumatizing for their victims.

Fortunately, because caring individuals like you had the foresight to help keep children safe online over 23 years ago, The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was able to launch the CyberTipline® in 1998. The CyberTipline is a national resource available to all children, the general public, and Internet Service Providers to report the exploitation of children online.

We all know that sexting/sending nudes is increasingly common among young people today. Unfortunately, sometimes people trusted with images break that trust, and the image is shared without permission. Other times the image is created or captured without consent altogether. These images are sometimes used in sextortion—causing unspeakable distress as expressed by the anonymous survivor above. Regardless of how the image made its way online—NCMEC's CyberTipline is here to help remove it and our team is here to offer support and guidance.

To prevent the trauma of online victimization before it ever happens, our child safety experts at NCMEC use data collected from the CyberTipline to create age-appropriate educational materials that parents, teachers, and other professionals utilize every day. These resources teach kids how to game online, use social media, text, and surf the internet in a responsible and safe way.

John, please consider making a gift to NCMEC today. Your donation will go towards helping prevent countless young people from experiencing the trauma of online and offline victimization.
