Now honored as a U.S. national holiday, Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, commemorates the anniversary of Black emancipation in the United States, honored on the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when freedom from slavery was proclaimed in the state of Texas.
Kick off a month of Juneteenth celebrations tomorrow with Foodwise, MegaBlack SF, and Port of San Francisco at the 2nd annual Juneteenth on the Waterfront. Celebrate local Black-owned businesses with a day of fun, community, and delicious, handcrafted food at the Embarcadero Ferry Terminal Plaza (south of the Ferry Building) and Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Entry is free and open to the public, and food and drink will be available for purchase. Check out the list of food vendors.
"Juneteenth is a day of reflection, it's a day of joy, of resistance, and of celebrating Black liberation as unapologetically as possible," says Shakirah Simley, cofounder of MegaBlack SF and Foodwise Board Member. Watch this video to hear from participants about what Juneteenth means to them, and join the celebration tomorrow!
