About the concert Yo-Yo Ma has set out to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s six suites for solo cello in one sitting, in 36 locations around the world. It’s a journey motivated not only by his six-decade relationship with the music, but also by Bach’s ability to speak to our common humanity at a time when our civic conversation is so often focussed on division. The project has brought music to iconic locations around the world, including the National Cathedral in Washington DC, the Nikolaikirche in Leipzig, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. Each concert is accompanied by a Day of Action, a series of conversations to explore how culture can help us build a better future. |

Warm up for the broadcast |

| | | | The cellist and humanitarian lives the questions we all ask about life and our humanity. Ma’s restless curiosity has opened doors lightyears beyond the standard cello repertoire. He’s commissioned a catalogue of new works and wandered off into musical ventures like his visit to the Kalahari bushmen and appearance on Sesame Street. | | | |
| | | | | With his sense of social responsibility and creation of projects that transcend their musical origins, cellist Yo-Yo Ma has achieved iconic status not just as a performer, but as an artist in the broadest sense of the term, using his art to help improve the lives of those who may not have even heard classical music before. | | | |

| | The prelude is the Holy Grail, a goal for every cellist to learn as soon as possible. So much so that cello teachers often need to hold their students in check so they don’t learn it too soon and become discouraged. This prelude is the first piece you will hear Yo-Yo Ma play in Australia; he has been playing it for over sixty years. | | |
