Utah students use ham radio to connect with astronaut during eclipse
The solar eclipse might not have been fully visible from Utah, but that didn’t stop a group of Tooele students from having an astronomical experience on Monday when they interviewed an astronaut aboard the International Space Station (ISS) as it passed over Utah.
The call started when the ISS was positioned above Utah, around 11:45 a.m. MDT. Clint Thomsen, the teacher who coordinated the event, switched on his radio and called out to the ISS, which orbits around 250 miles above sea level.
The crowd heard only static at first, but astronaut Mike Barratt’s voice finally crackled through the auditorium’s sound system.

More people think the COVID-19 pandemic’s ongoing than don’t, according to a new HarrisX poll for the Deseret News. That’s despite the fact that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared the pandemic in America over nearly a year ago, on May 11, 2023.
Han Kim, a professor of public health at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, thinks lots of people don’t understand the difference between a pandemic, an epidemic and an illness that — however dramatic it was in the past — has settled into an endemic phase, meaning it’s established and circulates, but not at its former scary level.
