By: Charles Bradley, Global Editor in Chief Motorsport.com Le Mans entered its bold Hypercar era at the weekend but one thing remained the same – Toyota dominated with a 1-2 performance that seldom looked in doubt. What was different about it, though, was that the #7 car that crossed the line in first place, giving Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez their first Le Mans victory. A just reward after years of disappointment, and a trio of wins for the sister car. All five Hypercars made the finish line, a fine reflection on the new class’s robustness – especially after two of them collided on the first lap! Elsewhere, there was agony and ecstasy at Team WRT, as its class-leading car broke down on the very last lap handing the win to its other LMP2 contender. Ferrari prevailed in GTE Pro, after a good fight with Corvette, and swept up in GTE Am too. Of course, Hypercar will only truly come of age in years to come, but with Audi, Ferrari, Peugeot, Porsche and many others planning to join, we’ve got a lot to look forward to. |
