NEBOSH HSE certificate in manual handling risk assessment

Worker carrying box out of van

24 July, HSE Science and Research Centre, Buxton

Poor manual handling is a major cause of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and employers must protect their workers from the risk of injury from hazardous manual handling in the workplace.

This course will equip delegates with the knowledge to recognise, assess and reduce manual handling risks in their organisation.

Delegates will be provided with information that will help them to:

  • understand why manual handling should be avoided, the moral, business and legal reasons for assessing and managing it and the common types of injuries that arise
  • understand the risk factors associated with manual handling, the application of HSE's manual handling assessment tools (MAC and RAPP) and what makes a risk assessment suitable and sufficient
  • explain what manual handling risks are and how they may result in injury
  • know how to avoid manual handling risks with the use of mechanical assistance and recognition of good handling techniques
  • explain the importance of reducing risks associated with manual handling activities
  • understand their organisation's responsibilities in relation to manual handling
  • apply wider elements of risk management for manual handling
