BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer The East Baton Rouge Parish EMS service has only 75 of the 102 total medics it requires, leading to a high volume of calls and potential burnout for medics. "Some of our medics don't have any downtime. They're literally going from one call to the next," said Brad Harris, a paramedic with East Baton Rouge EMS. To help develop future emergency personnel, East Baton Rouge EMS works with Explorers Post 912 in a program that connects teens with local first responders to gain hands-on training in the basics of firefighting or emergency medical care. "Our medics see it as an opportunity to teach their future co-workers," Harris said. Read more about the program. As a senior, Aurelius Paul Martinez was part of the first group of Black students to attend Baton Rouge High School as the district began integration in September 1963. But he apparently found his experiences that school year difficult to share with his children. "It was too painful for him to talk about," his daughter Adele Martinez said.
