There is often a disparity between the goals that state departments of transportation have for priced managed lanes and the public assumption for those goals. The public tends to be skeptical of priced managed lanes because the concept is difficult to explain to a non-technical audience. TRB will host a webinar on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 from 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern that will describe agency experiences about implementing priced managed lanes. Presenters will provide specific case examples and lessons learned.

This webinar is sponsored by the TRB Standing Committee on Managed Lanes. It will also feature research from NCHRP Synthesis Report 559: Emerging Challenges to Priced Managed Lanes.

Some registrants will need to pay $95 to attend this webinar. Sign into MyTRB.org to view registration information.

Webinar agenda and presenters

  1. How agencies can counter general misunderstandings of the concept of managed lanes: Tim Gibbs, City of Charlotte, North Carolina
  2. Performance management issues that stem from a maximum toll cap: Susan Shaw, Virginia Department of Transportation
  3. Enforcing carpools and other toll-exempt vehicles: Dan Lamers, North Central Texas Council of Governments
  4. Question and answer session: Nick Wood, Texas A&M Transportation Institute

The first 60 minutes of the webinar will be for presentations and the final 30 minutes will be reserved for audience questions.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Determine how to educate the public about implementing priced managed lane projects
  2. Identify practices that do and do not work to maintain performance of managed lane projects
