A dear friend called yesterday. She was in tears. Her husband had been hospitalized the day prior for serious malnutrition and stomach issues. He had been fighting these problems for a couple years but his health had worsened in recent months. He finally conceded to go to the hospital. And that’s when she found out that he had been hiding a drinking problem. His liver was severely damaged. The doctors began an aggressive treatment regime but couldn’t make any promises about his future. There was more. She also discovered that he had recently lost his job. He hadn’t told her. She is a woman with a gentle spirit and a strong faith, but these two revelations sent her spiraling. I understood. Her husband is a wonderful man, partner and father. Their marriage is strong. But now a trust was broken and that reality was stabbing her in the heart. We prayed together and I promised to check in with her later in the day. I heard from her just a couple hours later. She had gone back to the hospital and confronted him with what she found. It was the moment of truth and to his credit, he came clean. The job loss was the result of a downsizing and he just couldn’t face her with the news. He was deeply ashamed of the secret drinking and how bad it had gotten. He agreed to do whatever the doctors said he needed to do to get sober. It was a painful, raw moment, but it brought them both relief. Truth and humility go a long way toward rebuilding trust, as we see in today’s HR Leader story about True Religion.
