Hey traders, Frank Gregory here.
I wanted to chime in and talk about some things you have heard in the news recently.
Let's dig in.
Did you know that 3 of the top 5 largest ports in the US are on the East Coast? Yet 64% of the goods they export go to Asia. And roughly 68% of the goods they import come from Asia.
How do those goods pass back and forth? Well, through the Panama Canal, and that's why Trump's talking about it. You know, the canal was started in 1881 by the French. They hit a snag and in 1904 turned the canal over to the United States, which entered, finished the construction, entered into a treaty with the Panamanians, and in 1914, had the first ship traverse the canal.
Over the next 80 years, we ran that canal and the areas around it until 1977 when Jimmy Carter, bowing to pressure from the Panamanians, agreed to turn the control of the canal over to Panama. At the end of 1999, and that's exactly what happened.
So since December 31, 1999, Panama has controlled the canal, and that has allowed foreign influence to start creeping in. The US is particularly concerned about the influence of the Chinese, which have invested heavily in Latin America. And that could hurt our shipping.
Even today, close to 50% of all the goods that go through the Panama Canal are US-flagged goods, everything from agriculture to petroleum to liquefied natural gas. It is a vitally important waterway. That's why Trump's talking about it. It's a national security issue. We'll see how it plays out.
