| IMPORTANT | | Watching On | Trump Wasn’t Moved by Violence on Jan. 6, Committee Hears “President Trump did not fail to act … he chose not to act,” Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger told the hearing. Others with knowledge of his actions and whereabouts on Jan. 6 described Trump ignoring the pleas of his children to condemn the violence at the Capitol. Yesterday was the last of this summer’s scheduled hearings, but more have been promised. That could be bad news for Republicans, who hope to take control of Congress in November midterms. GOP voters are increasingly swayed by the explosive testimony: Today 40% partially blame Trump for the riot, up from 33% before the hearings began. (Sources: Politico, Reuters) |

| | Food Crisis | Deal or No Deal? Ukrainian Grain Exports Hang in the Balance We’ve got a deal. According to Turkey, at least. It says an agreement will be signed today in Istanbul to alleviate the world shortage of grain with the resumption of Ukrainian exports via the Black Sea. Ukrainian representatives are more cautious, saying a document “may be signed” during the United Nations-led negotiations. “We don't trust Russians at all. So let us wait till tomorrow for a final decision and that there will not be some pushbacks from Russians and last-minute changes,” Odesa MP Oleksiy Honcharenko warned. Any deal will include a provision that Russia must respect a truce during shipping times. (Source: BBC) |

| | | Setbacks | SCOTUS Hands White House Temporary Loss on Immigration The court’s conservative majority ruled in favor of Louisiana and Texas yesterday, allowing a temporary block on the Biden administration’s immigration enforcement guidelines. According to a federal judge in Texas, those guidelines would allow undocumented migrants with criminal records to be released into the community. The White House introduced the new rules almost a year ago, turning back some of the previous administration’s more draconian approaches to immigration. The guidelines set priorities for which immigrants the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency should detain, shifting the focus to “national security, public safety and border security” rather than the Trump administration’s blanket approach. | | Lingering Questions | Japan Grapples With Shinzo Abe’s Death, Legacy An investigation of images and footage from the assassination of the former prime minister earlier this month has revealed flaws in his personal security detail and shortcomings in security in the area. Experts who have viewed the footage say a two-second delay between the first shot and the fatal second shot should have given security ample time to intervene. Meanwhile, a civic group has pleaded with a court to bar a planned state funeral for Abe. It would be only the second state funeral for a post-war leader in Japan and critics say it could lionize the controversial former PM. (Sources: Nikkei Asia, Kyodo) |

| INTRIGUING | | Throwback | New York Detects First Case of Polio Since 2013 A Rockland County resident has been diagnosed, but officials stress they are no longer considered infectious. Still, they are experiencing paralysis, underlining the seriousness of the disease. Americans have been inoculated with inactivated vaccines — that is, those containing dead disease germs — after live vaccines were phased out in 2000. It’s likely this patient was infected in a country that still uses the older vaccine. CDC data shows no polio cases have originated within the U.S. since 1979, but public health officials warn that’s no reason to be complacent. Make sure you’re vaccinated, says New York City Health Commissioner Ashwin Vasan. (Source: NPR) |

| | Chopping Block | Tech Layoffs Threaten Diversity Gains Across Industry Pandemic-proof platforms are feeling the economic crunch — and progress in hiring may be a victim. Years of concerted, highly publicized efforts to welcome underrepresented female, LGBT and nonwhite workers into the industry have been somewhat successful, but researchers warn they’re likely to be the first employees shown the door. Sarah Kaplan from the University of Toronto’s Institute for Gender and the Economy warns that these groups often fill less prestigious roles that are seen as expendable. She says, “Even as companies have tried to make progress, that progress has not always been in the highest status and most highly compensated areas.” (Source: Wired) |

| | Closing Curtains | The Show Almost Didn’t Go On for Dave Chappelle in Minneapolis Local venue First Avenue canceled the comedian’s Wednesday show just hours before it opened, citing the backlash over his insensitive gags. “To staff, artists, and our community, we hear you and we are sorry. We know we must hold ourselves to the highest standards, and we know we let you down,” it said in a statement. Chappelle’s edgy brand of comedy has found itself increasingly at odds with the culture. His 2021 Netflix special The Closer was slammed by viewers and Netflix employees alike for its anti-trans views. Chappelle still took the stage Wednesday, relocating his show to another Minneapolis venue. (Source: The Week) |

| | Dead End | FBI Empty-Handed Once More in Ongoing Hunt for Jimmy Hoffa The former Teamsters boss wasn’t buried under the Pulaski Skyway in New Jersey, the FBI said Thursday. It’s the latest in a long list of potential burial spots across the eastern half of the country, but the Bureau considers the search open-ended. “While we do not currently anticipate any additional activity at the site, the FBI will continue to pursue any viable lead in our efforts to locate Mr. Hoffa,” spokesperson Mara Schneider says. Hoffa, who was reportedly planning the comeback of the powerful Teamsters union, went missing in Detroit in 1975 and is widely believed to have been murdered by mobsters. (Source: AP) |

| | | Podium Winner | Noah Lyles Sprints Into History Books at World Track Championships The 25-year-old world champion broke Michael Johnson’s 200-meter U.S. record at the World Track and Field in Eugene, Oregon, Thursday. Lyles clocked in at 19.31, shaving one-hundredth of a second off Johnson’s 1996 Atlanta Olympics record and smashing his own personal best of 19.50. It’s a welcome return to the top for Lyles, who ran for Team USA in the Tokyo Olympics last year but failed to live up to expectations. He said, “Today is my day and I finally got to do what I’ve dreamed about for years. I’ve got my whole family here.” (Sources: USA Today, ESPN) |
