TOP OF THE AGENDA | 700 Marines head to LA as unrest calms |
|
| | Rubber bullets and other non-lethal weapons have been used against the protesters, some of whom were detained. Credit: EPA | President Trump has ordered 2,000 additional National Guard troops and 700 Marines to LA as protests against immigration raids in the city continued for a fourth day on Monday. LA district attorney Nathan Hochman told the BBC that the city's law enforcement are capable of containing the unrest without additional resources. The situation in the city has generally been much calmer compared to the weekend, reports our correspondent Peter Bowes. But, he notes, the highly unusual prospect of the Marines on the streets has sent shivers through many communities. Demonstrations opposing raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have also taken place in other US cities. |
