For K-12 schools, Trump wants governors to reopen districts this fall; Walz says “it depends.” President Trump says he’ll put pressure on governors to reopen their states’ school districts this fall despite the pandemic. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz says the state is still figuring out how to best protect children and teachers and the school plan will depend on how successful the state is at containing the coronavirus. Will lawmakers reach an agreement in the next special session? Gov. Tim Walz is expected to call legislators into another special session that would convene Monday. In the first special session following the killing of George Floyd, lawmakers were unable to break through a stalemate over police reform and other key issues on the table. Democrats are again pushing GOP lawmakers to work with them on a police accountability bill, while Republicans say they don’t support any reforms to “dismantle or defund” police. Several Republican senators say they will not attend the Republican National Convention to renominate President Donald Trump in Jacksonville, Fla., in August. So far, Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Susan Collins of Maine are expected to skip the Aug. 24 gathering, and there could be more. Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, who voted for Trump's removal during the Senate impeachment trial, also won't be there, according to an aide.
