TOP OF THE AGENDA | Trump promises flurry of executive orders ahead of inauguration |

Credit: EPA | In just a few hours, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th president of the US. With sub-zero temperatures forecast, the formal swearing-in ceremony will break with tradition and be held indoors. The new president's first day will also feature a church service, tea with the Bidens and several formal balls. And if today wasn't going to be busy enough, Trump has promised to sign a series of executive orders, telling supporters that he would move with "historic speed and strength" in the hours after taking the oath of office. It's expected that the 78-year-old could sign 200 of the legally binding presidential directives on Monday. |

| Inauguration speech to 'set mood' of next four years | | Freezing temperatures mean the inauguration will be held inside for the first time in 40 years. Credit: Reuters | Once he has been sworn-in as the 47th president of the United States, Donald Trump will give his inauguration speech, in which he's expected to double-down on his campaign pledges. Shortly after, it's expected these focuses will be outlined in a lengthy series of executive actions – on immigration, trade, social policy, energy and foreign relations - cementing his agenda for the next four years. |

|
| | Today the US will engage in the peaceful transfer of power between two ideologically-distinct parties. That America could do this used to be a source of national pride - a sign that it was a beacon for the rest of the world. Four years ago, that sense of high self-regard was shattered by the attack on the US Capitol, at least for a time.
But here we are, back to the old norms and traditions, with the incumbent and past presidents, congressional leaders and various dignitaries and distinguished guests looking on as Donald Trump and JD Vance take their oaths of office.
Trump then will have his first chance to set the mood for his second presidential term, with his inaugural address. His “American carnage” speech eight years ago certainly held some clues for what was in store. |

BEYOND THE HEADLINES | How Gaza ceasefire's first day unfolded |
|
| | | The ceasefire brought joy to many displaced Gazans, but the humanitarian challenge is huge. Credit: Reuters | "And thus, the ceasefire has begun," a spokesperson for one of the mediators wrote on X as the final obstacles to an end to the fighting in Gaza were cleared on Sunday morning. After 15 months of war that began with a brutal attack on Israel by Hamas and ended with much of the Gaza Strip levelled by Israel, a long-hoped for ceasefire came into effect. We take a look at how the dramatic day played out. |

And finally... in Japan | We all feel lonely every now and again. So spare a thought for the sunfish in a Japanese aquarium who was missing visitors so much during a closure for renovations that staff created cardboard cut outs of people to create the illusion of friends. It did the trick, and the sunfish is back to eating jellyfish again and has even been seen "waving its fins", according to Kaikyokan aquarium in Shimonoseki. Take a look at the new best friends. | |
