I just returned from another month in Mexico! Upon arriving there this time, I commented to my wife that the town we keep returning to, Manzanillo, seems like a cartoon town. She knew exactly what I meant.
It’s the largest shipping port in the country, and, as is true nationwide, the average worker clocks 48 hours over a 6-day work week. In spite of their impressive work ethic, the city is a jumble of unexpected visuals:
Gorgeous mountains roll into the Pacific Ocean, entire families walk along busy streets, an Office Depot and a Starbucks are woven into a living tapestry that includes taquerias, farmacias, and churches. Young, inseparable couples cling together on benches. And, by the end of any day, no matter how great the fatigue is in tired, passing faces, it quickly vanishes into joy upon hearing “Hola!” from a passing stranger (that would be me).
It’s radically different than any-town, USA, but it works... really well. And each days' hustle and bustle builds like a crescendo into the evening and the reason for it all, friends and family.
I think they’ve figured something out, which until now had eluded me:
Our connection with others... is everything.
