As I waited in an unexpectedly long line with my 4 year old daughter (1 hour for lunch at the Science Center), I thought of a million other places I’d rather be and a million other things we could be doing… but I caught myself.
I remembered that no one has to do anything… we get to. Remembering this never fails to give me a swift attitude adjustment. It reminds me that every fleeting moment of our lives is a gift.
So I hoisted her up upon my shoulders, did a tiny, silly dance, brought her down, made up a story about aliens causing the delay, tickled her until she was laughing uncontrollably, traded whispered secrets with her, and felt so blessed that I got to have that time with her.
Next time you think you “have to” do something, remember there are people all over the world who because of loneliness, poverty, disease, and much worse, would LOVE to trade places with you and get to have those experiences that you alone can have.
