Twitter data leak exposes over 5.4 million accounts

Well, heyo friends.

Hope you had a good weekend. Twitter seems to be in the news a lot lately, and the latest headlines are about... stolen data leaked online.

Let's talk about it.

What happened?

Here's your quick rundown of what happened:
  • Earlier this year, private user data for 5.4 million Twitter users was stolen due to an API vulnerability.
  • Now, all of those accounts have been exposed on a hacker forum—for free.
  • The data consists of scraped public information as well as private phone numbers and email addresses that are not meant to be public.

Why does it matter?

Here's why I think this matters to IT.
  • The most significant threat emerging from this breach, according to experts, is social engineering.
  • Armed with names and addresses harvested from this breach, cybercriminals could easily target users with phishing, vishing, and smishing scams.
  • While not foolproof, it's good to remind employees to activate two-factor authentication on their personal accounts.
