The Daily Crunch 10/27/16 Twitter's trying, Facebook continues to copy and Tesla turns out a profit. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for October 27, 2016. And if you're looking for a new MacBook, today is your lucky day. 1. Twitter's tough times Twitter's basically set on going it alone for the foreseeable future after potential acquirers have fallen away one by one. The company made some cost cutting moves announced alongside its results, including a 9 percent global workforce cut or more than 300 people. That's bad news, but Twitter did beat analyst expectations in Q3 across every measure, which is good. Still, expectations weren't high, so as a business it still has to turn things around, especially regarding growth. 2. Facebook gets even more Snapchatty Doing away with all pretence, Facebook has introduced augmented reality live filters for Facebook Live. Its filters are powered by deep learning algorithms, and it looks pretty cool if you're into that sort of thing. Remember when competition meant more than just copying the competition? Neither do I. 3. Qualcomm is buying NXP for $47 billion That's a lot of cash, but NXP supplies a lot of chips. And Qualcomm does too, but Qualcomm wants a bit of what NXP is good at, which is identity, security and automotive silicon. Those are all big growth areas so this looks like a very smart tie-up. 4. AirPods, delayed Apple has delayed its AirPod roll-out, TechCrunch learned from the company. They were set to hit shelves in October, but now they won't – and there isn't a new date for when to expect them. It's not the first time Apple has delayed a product because it wasn't ready, so this isn't a huge deal. But wireless was a key part of the iPhone 7 pitch so people are understandably impatient. 5. Tesla's Q3 was strong and Musk is happy Tesla's Q3 earnings were good, like turning a profit good, and the company is upbeat about Q4 as well. On a conference call discussing the earnings, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was thrilled about how things were going, from production to reliability improvements. The CEO also took the time to address speculation that Tesla wants to compete with Uber with Tesla Network, an on-demand service it plans to offer for Tesla owners who have self-driving cars they want to loan out in the future. Musk positions it as 'power to the people,' interestingly enough. 6. Tesla's future proof future roof Tesla has a busy week, since it's also hosting an event on October 28. This will see the company reveal its solar roof product for the first time, as well as an integrated energy storage solution and Tesla car charger. It's the contained energy system dream realized, and it sounds like it should be something to see. 7. Apple event today Lastly but definitely not leastly, there was a special Apple event today. We saw dramatically redesigned new MacBook Pros, the introduction of the Touch Bar for the MacBook Pro, a new app for Apple TV called, well, "TV" and a lot more. |
