STUDENT COMPETITION: NEXT GENERATION OF STROKE REHABILITATION CENTRES

The International Union of Architects (UIA) has launched the Next Generation of Stroke Rehabilitation Centres international student ideas competition open to all architecture students around the world. The competition is organised by the UIA Public Health Group and the NOVELL Redesign Team. It is co-sponsored by the Australian Health Design Council (AHDC). The competition invites students to design a rehabilitation centre for 30 stroke survivors and seeks creative and ambitious designs to meet stroke survivors' needs during their recovery.

 REGISTRATION DEADLINE 20 AUGUST: UIA GREAT GREEN WALL STUDENT COMPETITION

The registration deadline for the UIA Great Green Wall Student Architecture Competition is fast approaching on 20 August. Open to all architecture students around the world, it will spotlight innovative design ideas for providing simplified affordable housing within the 8000 km long, 16 km wide living region stretching across the Sahel-Savanah desert region from Dakar to Djibouti known as the Great Green Wall (GGW). RESULTS: INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION FOR EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT BUILDING

The European Parliament announced the results of the international design competition for the renewal of its plenary building (SPAAK), located in a complex in central Brussels, Belgium. Launched on 26 May 2020 and endorsed by the UIA, a team composed of JDS Architects (Denmark), Coldefy (France), NL Architects (Netherlands), Carlo Ratti Associati (Italy), ENSAMBLE STUDIO (Spain), UTIL cvba (Belgium) and Ramboll (Denmark) was awarded first prize by the jury.

NEW UIA WORK PROGRAMME: INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

The UIA announces the creation of its new Indigenous Peoples Work Programme. Sponsored by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), thenewly launched Work Programme aims to foster and promote the value of design and architecture based on Indigenous Knowledges. The UIA Indigenous Peoples Work Programme will provide the global architectural community with the knowledge, skills, and resources to advocate for and work in collaboration with Indigenous communities for a better world for all. Dr. Luugigyoo Patrick Stewart Nisga’a Nation (Canada) and Elisapeta Heta Maori (New Zealand) have been nominated as co-directors of this programme.

CANADA:  NEW PRESIDENT 

Jason Robbins was elected President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) for the 2022-2024 term. After completing a Masters in Architecture at the University of Manitoba, he worked as an architect for 9 years for the Canadian Department of Defense and founded JC Robbins Architecture. Active at RAIC since 2017, he is a founding board member of Storefront Manitoba, a non-profit organisation that advances appreciation of architecture. He succeeds John Brown.

ETHIOPIA: NEW PRESIDENT 

Habtamu Getachew is the newly elected President of the Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA). Graduate in Architecture and Urban Planning from Addis Ababa University, he possesses over twenty years of experience practicing architecture. He is the founder and principal of ​​HABTAMU GETACHEW Consulting Architects and Engineers, a consulting firm specialising in building design, construction supervision and contract administration. He succeeds Amanuel Teshome.

PORTUGAL:  ARCHITECTURE TRIENNIAL

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale 2022, Terra,is taking place from 29 September to 5 December. The programme consists of four exhibitions, four books, three awards, three days of conferences and a selection of independent projects. Co-curated by Cristina Veríssimo and Diogo Burnay, Terra incorporates discussion and an exchange of knowledge culminating in a call to take action for a more sustainable future for the planet and all its inhabitants.

ZAMBIA: 2022 INDABA

The Zambia Institute of Architects (ZIA) is hosting its first 2022 Built Environment Indaba from 1 to 2 September at Mulungushi Conference Centre in Lusaka, Zambia. The event aims to address questions, practices, methods and modes of research and development that can “inform the urgently needed transformation of the Zambian construction industry to enable a sustainable, equitable and inclusive future for all.” UIA President José Luis Cortés will be a keynote speaker.

ECUADOR: BAQ 2022

The Colegio de Arquitectos de Ecuador - Pichincha (CAE-P) is hosting the 23rd Panamerican Biennial of Quito (BAQ) from 14 to 18 November 2022 themed "Inflexiones : volver a ver". The event will include conferences, roundtables, exhibitions, workshops and awards. UIA President, José-Luis Cortés, will participate.

COSTA RICA: INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL

The Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica organised the Bienal Internacional de Arquitectura from 25 to 28 May 2022 with the theme, Arquitectura + Resiliencia = Oportunidades Emergentes. The event featured speakers from across Latin America and beyond. UIA President José Luis Cortés was present at this event.  Find out more about the biennal and watch the conference here

BRAZIL: FORUM INTERNATIONAL

The International Forum of Councils, Orders and Organizations of Architecture and Urbanism of Brazil (CAU/BR) hosted an international forum on international professional mobility. Held at the Portuguese Embassy in Brasilià from 21 to 23 July 2022, the event included the participation of the UIA President José Luis Cortés. Watch the event here

ETHIOPIA: CONVENTION & ANNIVERSARY

The Association of Ethiopian Architects (AEA) celebrated its 30th anniversary during its 22nd annual Convention & Exhibition, held on 23 July at the Ambassador Mall, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The event also hosted the elections of the new Executive Bureau for the period 2022-2025.

LEBANON: GRAIN SILOS, PORT OF BEIRUT

The UIA joins the international call for the reversal of the decision by public authorities in Lebanon to demolish the grain silos at the Port of Beirut for reasons of public safety. This decision has been questioned by various stakeholders given that there are residential areas in the neighbouring area with unstable buildings damaged by the explosion.

During its Extraordinary General Assembly held in May 2022 in Madrid (Spain), delegates unanimously supported the motion presented by the Federation of Lebanese Engineers.

The UIA Heritage and Cultural Identity Work Programme hosted a webinar with a panel of experts on the subject of Adaptive Reuse of Historic Buildings. Featuring speakers from Kenya, Israel, Nepal, and India, the event discussed sustainability, restoration and energy technology with the objective of the conservation of global heritage.
