UIA - Newsletter

Created by the UIA in 1985, World Architecture Day is celebrated on the first Monday of October in parallel with UN World Habitat Day. By choosing the theme “Clean environment for a healthy world”, the UIA hopes to contribute to the global conversation on the 2030 development agenda by focusing on three key areas: housing, public spaces and their relation to climate change.

The UIA encourages all its Member Sections, architects and architecture students around the world to participate in World Architecture Day 2021 by developing their own activities based on this year’s theme, advocating for greener and more sustainable architectural practices, and joining the UIA World Architecture Day webinar on 4 October. Details to be announced shortly.

THESSALONIKI CONFEX PARK INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION: RESULTS

The team composed of Sauerbruch Hutton (Germany), Gustafson Porter + Bowman (United Kingdom) and Elena Stavropoulou (Greece) have won the UIA-endorsed International Architectural Design Competition for the Thessaloniki ConfEx Park. The jury unanimously selected the winning project following a three-day meeting in Thessaloniki held on 21-23 July, praising the project’s “natural urban integration of the expo site into the fabric of the city.”

THE DAYLIGHT AWARD 2022: REMINDER OF THE DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS

The Daylight Award calls upon UIA Member Section Presidents, Bureau and Council members to nominate qualified candidates for the 2022 Edition of this Award recognising excellence in daylight research and daylight in architecture, for the benefit of human health, well-being and the environment. The deadline is 30 September.

5TH EDITION OF THE BAKU INTERNATIONAL AWARD: DEADLINE EXTENDED

The deadline for the reception of projects for the 5th Edition of the Baku International Award has been extended to 15 September 2021. Organised by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Union of Architects of Azerbaijan (UAA), and endorsed by the UIA since 2013, the biennial award recognises innovative excellence in urban planning and architectural projects globally.

CANADA: ANNUAL CONGRESS 2021

The Royal Architecture Institute of Canada (RAIC)’s 2021 Congress on Architecture will take place virtually on 4 October 2021, World Architecture Day, and will bring professionals together to ignite action, strengthen connections, and share ideas on the issue of Climate action and Architecture in Canada, this year's theme. Continuing education certificates will be available.

LEBANON: NEW PRESIDENT

Aref Yassine was elected president of the Lebanese Order of Engineers and Architects in July. Born in 1963, A. Yassine was a member of the Order’s working committees which notably drafted the law on professional organisation (1997). He has been Secretary General of the Section of Civil Engineers since 2019. He succeeds Jad Tabet in the position.

KENYA: ANNUAL CONVENTION

The Architectural Association of Kenya (AAK) is holding its annual convention both virtually and physically at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort, Mombasa from 22-25 September 2021 with the theme: The Built Environment and Climate Action: An Impactful Way Forward.

UK: 2021 CHARLES JENCKS AWARD

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has presented the Charles Jencks Award to Anupama Kundoo, 2021 winner of the UIA Auguste Perret Prize. The annual award is given to an individual or practice who has simultaneously made a major contribution to both the theory and practice of architecture.

BRAZIL: GUSTAVO CAPANEMA PALACE

The Brazilian government has decided to sell Gustavo Capanema Palace in Rio de Janeiro, an important monument of Brazilian civic architecture. Organisations such as theFederación Panamericana de Asociaciones de Arquitectos (FPAA), the Instituto de Arquitetos do Brasil (IAB)andDocomomo International are speaking out in defense of the iconic building formerly housing the Ministry of Education, Health and Culture. SWITZERLAND: SIBYLLE BUCHER (1965-2021)

The UIA expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of architect Sibylle Bucher who passed away in August. A distinguished architect and founder of B.E.R.G Architects in Zurich, Switzerland, S. Bucher participated actively in the Society of Swiss Engineers and Architects (SIA) since 1999, serving as a member of SIA Competition Commission, and in the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) since 2014. As co-chair of the ACE working group on public procurement and architectural design competitions since 2018, she contributed her extensive knowledge of Swiss competition culture to promoting architectural quality in Europe. She was recently elected as an alternate member of the UIA Council.

Condolences may be sent to the Society of Swiss Engineers and Architects.
