Help SAAM Create Educational Resources for Kids SAAM art educators work year-round to create innovative projects to spark curiosity. They were excited to focus on William H. Johnson’s Fighters for Freedom series, created in the mid-1940s. SAAM’s educators describe the artworks as “puzzles begging to be solved: full of intriguing people, places, and symbols.” Inspired by the series, they created two new free digital resources to decode the historical figures and multi-layered symbols represented in the artworks. With these free resources, students can: Explore notable African American activists, scientists, teachers, and performers as well as international heads of state working to bring peace to the world. Highlight specific parts of select paintings and learn about the meanings behind the symbols. Connect art and history in unexpected ways by learning about related objects from other Smithsonian museums. |
