We know - you didn’t move to the Netherlands to think about legal paperwork. You’d much rather be cycling along the canals, enjoying bitterballen or mastering the Dutch art of small talk (Gezellig, hè?). But before you get too comfortable, here’s something important to consider:
Your relationship, property and inheritance arrangements might not work the way you expect in the Netherlands. The laws here could be different from those in your home country, meaning that your existing agreements - or lack thereof - may not be valid or up to date.
What happens to your assets if something unexpected occurs? Does your partner automatically inherit everything? Will your foreign will hold up under Dutch law? These are questions worth asking before they become urgent.
So, while we don’t want to interrupt your Dutch adventure, we do suggest taking a moment to check if everything is properly arranged. A little legal clarity now can save a lot of complications later.
