Unveiling the 2024 Power List

Today we are releasing a special issue of Maclean’s highlighting Canada’s 100 most powerful people. I confess: it’s become one of my favourite issues to publish. The Maclean’s Power List is a sweeping snapshot of the country, where power resides and how it operates.

We organized the list into different categories. As you’ll see, we used some straightforward topic areas like education, politics, sports, business, tech and culture, with 10 people highlighted in each. But we also feature a bunch of categories that you might call issue-based, such as climate, AI and housing. The big players in those fields, we believe, will shape the future of Canada.

Our list is not exactly scientific. It’s more of a cheat sheet on who’s who, created by a team of editors who watch the country closely, keep track of the people dominating the headlines and think deeply about what matters now. If you believe we’ve left off anyone important, please let us know. There’s always next year’s list—which we’ve already started building.

In September of 2023, Tate McRae’s single “Greedy” started a sprint up the charts, hitting No. 1 around the same time as she performed on Saturday Night Live and landed on the cover of Billboard magazine. Who was this suddenly unavoidable presence whipping her hair, who had more TikTok followers than Beyoncé? Now the 21-year-old pop phenomenon is ready to win over the world.

The minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship is reining in a runaway international-student market—and making sure a Canadian degree is still worth something. “You couldn't build institutions fast enough to provide quality education for so many students,” says Marc Miller. “We had to say enough is enough.”

Unwilling to see her city decline, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow pressured all levels of government to step up—and she has the money to show for it. She closes big-ticket deals quickly, bolstered by a time-honoured strategy: aligning with old rivals to play hardball with old friends.
