CLOSE TO HOME GALA

Celebrate the intersection of Art, Culture, and Community

You’re invited to come home to our region’s premiere art museum.

The Close to Home Gala will be an unforgettable night of art, cuisine, live auction, dancing, music, and entertainment from the talents of

Dance Cooperative, Mangroove, Fantasy Band, and Cape Fear’s own

Ray Kennedy as the emcee and auctioneer with

help from Michelle Braxton.

Experience the new exhibition Close to Home, the largest installation of

CAM’s permanent collection in its history.

The live auction features three color-centric works by London-based artist

Selena Beaudry, whose artistic practice encompasses various mediums, including paintings, work on paper, and installations, as well as an opportunity to have dinner at the museum with American artists Thomas Sayre and Stephen Hayes. Additional auction items include trips, jewelry, and more – all while supporting the work CAM does in our region.

It’s a night you won’t want to miss that supports the vital role CAM plays in preserving, showcasing, and promoting art and culture in our region through exhibitions, programs, and outreach to our community.

Thomas Sayre: Four Walls

Thomas Sayre: Four Walls features new and never exhibited works by American artist Thomas Sayre (American, b. 1950). Each of the four large-scale pieces installed in Cameron Art Museum’s Hughes Wing engage the belief systems and symbols that underpin the ideals of church, nation, and creation. Made of materials that include tar, smoke, fabric gowns, gunshots, welding material, earth and fire, these works invite visitors to draw close and experience the messiness of making, and by analogy, to bear witness to the ways that life invades, entangles, and tarnishes us. Flying School (Ecole d’aviation)

Welcome the return of Diane Landry’s (Canadian, b. 1958) signature work Flying School (Ecole d’aviation), 2000. Its multi-colored umbrellas, attached to rods at different heights, fold and unfold intermittently, like a person inhaling and exhaling. Motor-driven accordions lie at each of the umbrella bases. Their silhouettes cast by the halogen lighting are projected upward on the ceiling, resembling flowers opening and closing. The magical umbrella accordions are a hybrid of light and sound, infused with elements of sculpture, musical craftsmanship, and electronics.

Use bright colors to empower yourself! Experimentation with bold color and multiple tools to paint with will unlock your creative possibilities. Use pattern,

and vivid hues to ignite emotions from passion to joy! Van Gogh, O’Keefe, and Matisse are just a few of the artists that used bright colors! Choose an artist’s painting that you would love to paint or create your own. I will also have photos.
