Emerging Pedagogies Symposium: Teaching and Learning in the Age of AI |
Join Duke Learning Innovation and invited guest Ashok Goel, Professor of Computer Science and Human-Centered Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology, along with Matt Hirschey, Director of the Center for Computational Thinking at Duke, for a discussion of the impacts, opportunities and challenges of AI in the realm of teaching, learning and educational research. Thinking within and beyond the classroom, we will consider what the growth of AI will mean for courses and curricula, as well as for future workplaces and adult learning. We must prepare students during their time at Duke to use AI efficiently and effectively for career success. Faculty and staff working at Duke, and Duke alumni working around the world, will also need to become skilled in the use of AI to support their lifelong learning and professional growth, as part of keeping Duke in the forefront as an institution. |

ChatGPT for Academic Research: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly |

While the technology of ChatGPT is rapidly evolving, AI chatbots have the potential to profoundly change the way we search for information and conduct research online. We will look at what sources ChatGPT is built on and discuss specific scenarios in which students are using ChatGPT to find sources and summarize research literature. From the pitfalls of citation hallucinations to the potential of accelerating research, we will discuss the practical and ethical implications of the widespread adoption of ChatGPT as a personal research assistant. |

Dr. Nicolette Cagle will introduce an approach to increasing faculty and student capacities to work effectively across a wide range of human difference: cultural competency and humility. Then Dr. Cagle will reflect on her experiences using this approach with hundreds of students and faculty, followed by a robust discussion about the approach: what works, what doesn't work, why, and whether it can be improved and more. |
