Update on the Decadal Survey in

The Co-Chairs of the Decadal Survey on Planetary Science and Astrobiology have recognized challenges to the community in meeting the previously defined July 4th deadline for Decadal white papers. Input from the community is crucial to the success of the Decadal, and changes have been made to the white paper deadlines. Changes are as follows: - Science white papers that identify (per the Decadal Statement of Task) “the most compelling science questions, goals, and challenges that should motivate future strategy in planetary science, astrobiology, and planetary defense” will be due JULY 15. These white papers are the first ones needed for initial steering group and panel discussions that must commence this summer.
- Mission concept white papers will be due AUGUST 15. This coincides with the delivery date of results from the NASA-funded mission concept studies to the panels.
- All other white papers (e.g., the state of the profession, infrastructure, interaction with human space exploration, etc.) will be due SEPTEMBER 15.
About the Decadal Survey on Planetary Science and Astrobiology
The Decadal Survey on Planetary Science and Astrobiology will assess key scientific questions in planetary science and astrobiology, identify priority medium- and large-class missions and other initiatives, and present a comprehensive research strategy for the 2023-2032 timeframe. Community input in these areas and related activities—including, theory, computing, technology development, laboratory studies, planetary defense, and human exploration activities—are critical for the success of the survey. Many opportunities will exist to share your thoughts with the survey.
