River rescue: Three teenagers are "safe and well" after being swept away while swimming in the Hunter River near Denman on Friday. Multiple emergency crews rushed to the site, winching the kids to safety. Find out what happened. Health stats: The latest Bureau of Health Information data shows fewer elective surgeries were performed in the Hunter New England in the latest quarter. Between July and September almost 6,500 surgeries were performed at hospitals across the region, a 15 per cent drop compared to the same time last year. Uni EA: The Newcastle branch of the National Tertiary Education Union is hoping the University of Newcastle reconsiders its latest enterprise agreement offer to better reflect inflation. The latest offer includes a 9.5 per cent salary increase over three years and six extra days of paid holidays per year. The university says the offer provides stability and supports sustainability over the next three years. New freight line: The state government says it has confirmed the route for a future link between Fassifern and Hexham for rail freight. The long-planned link will separate freight from passenger lines and should alleviate traffic congestion at level crossings in the city. Melanoma hotspot: The Hunter New England Local Health District is in the top five melanoma hotspots in the state. The Northern New South Wales Health District tops the list, Mid North Coast is second and Hunter New England third. Fernleigh track work: Work is about to begin on the final missing link of the Fernleigh Track.
