Hi John,

Not for the first time, people around the world are struggling to understand one of US President Donald Trump's pronouncements, this one being about the Chinese telecommunications equipment vendor Huawei Technologies.

A report on the security of Internet-of-Things devices made by Huawei, published by company named Finite State, claims that analysis of 9936 firmware images in 558 different products shows that these devices are less secure than those from other vendors like Juniper and Arista.

Meanwhile Finnish telecommunications equipment vendor Nokia has slapped down its chief technology officer after he made comments to the BBC on Thursday, claiming that Chinese rival Huawei's equipment was full of security vulnerabilities.

Microsoft has refused to fix a vulnerability in its Excel spreadsheet, which has about 120 million users worldwide, after the email security provider Mimecast informed the software giant that the Power Query tool could be used to embed malicious content in an Excel document.

The era of open banking in Australia will be eased in from Monday, and will force major banks to surrender their hold on customers' banking data to the customers themselves, the deputy chief executive of the branchless digital outfit, Volt Bank, says.

Sydney will host the annual Security Exhibition & Conference, the biggest commercial event for the security industry in Australia, at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour from 24 to 26 July.
