Photo provided by US Sen Chris Van Hollen | Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen has published photos of his meeting with Kilmar Ábrego García, whose case has sparked off an escalating showdown between the US president and the courts. Even though officials have acknowledged Mr Ábrego García was deported by mistake, they are refusing judicial orders to take steps to return him to the US. After the meeting, which appeared to take place in a hotel, El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele said the detainee would remain in the country's custody. The White House has accused Mr Ábrego García of being a member of the transnational Salvadoran gang MS-13, which his lawyer denies. Van Hollen, a Democrat, said he would share more information about his trip once he returned to the US on Friday. The White House called the visit "disgusting". |
