Labor is tight as retailers head into the holidays US retailers have gotten an earlier jump on recruiting holiday help in the tight labor market. Michaels and ALDI have kicked off efforts to each hire about 20,000 seasonal staffers and other retailers, including Walmart and Target, have recently raised wages and added new perks such as tuition assistance to recruit and retain employees. In the two weeks since Delta Air Lines announced that employees who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 would pay a $200 monthly health insurance surcharge, 20% of the airline's unvaccinated workers have gotten their shots, said Henry Ting, Delta's chief health officer. US workers want immediate access to wages Eighty-three percent of US employees want to be able to access wages at the end of each day or shift, and there are "clear expectations from millennials through to Generation X employees (between the ages of 18-44) to make payday more flexible," according to a survey by Ceredian and The Harris Poll. In addition, 80% of employees would like their wages paid automatically into their accounts as they are earned, and 81% would prioritize employers that offer free access to on-demand pay.
