Good Morning Voornaam,

It just feels so negative to say "oh, there's my load shedding" three times a day. I also suspect that you are using a more colourful word than "oh" - I know I certainly am, at least when Toddler Ghost isn't nearby.

So, for my sanity, I've decided to rather focus on when the power comes on, as it seems that this will be the more unusual occurrence each day. I'm referring to this as the PowerWindow (trademark pending), similar to DRS in Formula 1 that gives you a short period in which to enter maximum attack mode.

After waiting around for the lights to come back on, you have a 4-hour window in which to do ALL your work.

This has clear efficiency benefits, particularly as other people in your business are probably on different schedules. The overlap each day might be just an hour, which certainly helps drive more effective meetings. Gone are the days of small talk on Zoom - it's now strictly business.

Jokes aside, South Africans are nothing if not resilient. We seem to take everything in our stride, though Level 6 was nearly the end for a few people yesterday. We have to hope it will be a short-lived fiasco. Because hope is not a long-term strategy, you should be #SavingForSolar - this hashtag goes nicely with the PowerWindow concept.

If there's a company out there that has shown resilience, it's Sun International. The pandemic was horrible for casino businesses and the share price is still around 30% down from where it was trading at the start of 2020. Though one must always take the balance sheet into account when comparing pre- and post-pandemic valuations, it's encouraging that adjusted EBITDA exceeded 2019 levels in the first five months of 2022. This group will be thrilled to see the end of mask mandates, as resorts and casinos are all about people getting out there and having fun. To help you learn more about S un International's recent performance, I wrote this feature article on its capital markets update yesterday.

This morning's other feature article is on Grindrod, a long-standing favourite of value investors who tend to walk around with a permanent blue eye. It's tough to watch a share price go sideways for a year, waiting for a catalyst that finally wakes up a slumbering dragon and unlocks value. In this case, the catalysts have ranged from volumes at the port in Mozambique through to the proposed disposal of Grindrod Bank to African Bank. To find out why Grindrod's share price is up around 80% this year, refer to this feature article.

It was a busy day on the JSE, with plenty of news beyond Sun International and Grindrod. For example, Nedbank released another update that confirms ongoing good vibes in the banking industry. People are borrowing and rates are heading higher, which is good news for banks. Amongst the more unusual companies on the JSE, Kore Potash is a big step closer to producing Muriate of Potash, which sounds like the eighth Harry Potter book that never made it to the publishers. For these updates and more on Motus, Spear, Etion, Accelerate Property Fund and more, make sure you read Ghost Bites today.

For our daily update on the rand and other economic indicators, the team at TreasuryO NE always has us covered. Of course, level 6 PowerWindows aren't great news for the rand, which broke the R16.00 level. Wichard Cilliers (Head of Market Risk at TreasuryONE) thinks that the rand could test the highs of R16.20 reached earlier this month. We've also seen oil trading higher based on the UAE announcing that they are supplying at full capacity, which squashed hopes of boosted supply. The UAE and Saudi Arabia have been seen as the only two countries with spare capacity to make up for lost Russian supply and weak output from other member nations.

All eyes this week are on the speeches by Fed Chair Powell and ECB President Lagarde. To help understand why, Andre Botha (Senior Dealer at TreasuryONE) has written this article that recap s the news last week and looks ahead to the EU inflation and other data releases this week.

To help you pass the time between PowerWindows, the Magic Markets podcast is a wonderful way to learn more about the world of finance that I love so much. In Episode 81, the team from Westbrooke Alternative Asset Management joined us to discuss hybrid capital: a debt-led approach to private equity. Listen to the show here and get ready to learn.

Enjoy the content and try to smile today even though it's tough. I hope I helped just a little bit with that!

Ghost Bites Vol 37 (22)

Sun International and Grindrod released interesting updates. There was also important news from Nedbank, Kore Potash, Motus, Spear REIT, Etion and others.

In a capital markets day presentation, Sun International gave great insights into its recovery journey after the pandemic. Things are looking up!

Sun is shining brighter
Securing portfolio stability during anxious times

While many investors bias their decisions towards higher returns and a search for alpha, diversification and the inclusion of lower risk options remain an important part of the mix.

Grindrod is winning because Transnet is losing. With a successful port and terminals operation in Mozambique, shareholders are smiling.

Grindrod: now that's a terminal growth rate
Some relief on inflation - or is there?

All eyes will be on speeches by Fed Chair Powell and ECB Chief Lagarde on Wednesday. EU inflation numbers are due this week. Watch out for related commodity and rand moves.

Hybrid capital investments achieve a return somewhere between debt and equity, with downside protection and upside exposure.
