images/mugs-300/Stuart-Adams.jpgGuest opinion: The virus fight is not over, but we will persevere and overcome
By Utah Senate President J. Stuart Adams
The last nine months have been trying for Utahns and our state. At the start of 2020, our economy was thriving, and Utah's unemployment rate was 2.5 percent - the lowest in the nation and the lowest in the state's history. Then everything came to an abrupt halt as COVID-19 reached our state's borders. This year has been challenging, but Utahns have found more strength and determination to overcome our current difficulties and prepare for future disruptions. I want to express my gratitude and acknowledge the healthcare workers, teachers, law enforcement, business owners, Utahns and state and local elected officials for stepping up to address this pandemic head-on. Nothing good just happens, and while we can and will continue to make improvements, it is wise to take a moment to recognize how far we have come as a state.

By LaVarr Webb
This week we're asking Utah leaders what they're grateful for. If you'd like to participate, shoot me an email at lwebb@utahpolicy.com and tell me what you're thankful for. Here are some responses from four Utah state senators: Senate Pres. Stuart Adams: I am grateful for: Utah having the lowest Covid case fatality rate in the Nation. Second lowest in the World. Covid Vaccine that is almost ready to use. Done in record time! Zoom technology and other advances that have helped us deal with Covid. Utah having a great economy even in a pandemic. Great friends that want to help. Supportive and loving family that have bonded together to take care of family members.

By Staff
One of the best political e-newsletters that help readers keep up to speed on politics and public policy is the Washington Update produced by The Orrin G. Hatch Foundation and Executive Director Matt Sandgren. The special edition recapping the 2020 election newsletter provides excellent insights on how Trump lost, but Trumpism won, how the progressive agenda lost, how Biden's "boring" politics won, and how the pollsters got it wrong again.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT), along with Reps. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Mike Gallagher (R-WI), have introduced the American Financial Markets Integrity and Security Act. Romney to congressional leadership: Let states lead sage grouse conservation
WASHINGTON-U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) has joined his colleagues, led by U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-ID) and Representative Mike Simpson (R-ID), in sending a bicameral letter to Senate and House leadership urging the continued Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing prohibition for greater sage-grouse. "[T]his prohibition gives the state conservation plans time to be effectively implemented and show results," the letter reads in part. "Instead of allowing the greater sage-grouse to be another victim of the activism industry that has been built around ESA-related litigation, we want to conserve the species. Using the knowledge and personal buy-in from states and local communities that have invested years in the development and implementation of these plans is the best way to do so."
