Situational Analysis - November 6, 2020Welcome to Friday. Wow. What a week it has been. And now we have to worry about this: A 'God of Chaos' Asteroid Could Hit Earth in 2068 (Popular Mechanics). Well, at least I won't be around. TICK TOCK11 days to the Board of Canvassers meeting (11/17/2020 Today At Utah PolicyState government is a model of stability compared to the fedsBy LaVarr Webb Politics at the national level is messy, chaotic and uncertain. But in Utah, there could hardly be more stability, continuity and tranquility. Utah has a new governor, but he's very familiar because he's currently the lieutenant governor. And in demeanor and approach, he's much like the current governor. Meanwhile, Utah has new legislative leaders, but they are also very familiar because they're also the old legislative leaders.Webb Wrap: What happens with the Trump base? . . . Love affair between Trump & Fox News is over By LaVarr Webb I always say a vote of 50% plus 1 equals political success. You don't need more than that. I like politicians who are willing to use up their political capital to do hard, but needed, things, even if it means they don't enjoy 80% approval ratings. All they need is 50% plus 1 for political success. Still, when an election winner barely squeaks by with just over half the vote, it's worth considering why the other nearly half of voters didn't vote for you. I hope Joe Biden, if he wins the presidency, takes that into account. He needs to understand why all those working-class, middle-America voters supported Pres. Trump. It's quite remarkable that nearly half of America wanted Trump, despite his flaws, quirks, a raging pandemic and a collapsed economy.Friday change of pace: The joy of walking By LaVarr Webb When people tell me to "Go take a hike" (it does happen frequently), I assume they're looking out for my health, rather than insulting me. When I was young, I did a lot of walking, but it seemed it was always to get somewhere. My parents had 10 kids and for many years just one car which was in high demand. So I didn't have a lot of motorized transportation to get where I wanted to go. So I walked a lot. To visit my friends, go to a store, get to the best fishing hole or to scare up a pheasant. Walking itself wasn't the point. Walking was a means to an end. I loved to hike in the mountains, but even hiking was generally done with a destination or goal in mind-a fishing lake or mountain pass, a spectacular view, or to rack up high miles to brag about. Herbert statement on rising COVID-19 cases in Utah Thursday the Utah Department of Health reported 2,807 cases of COVID-19, 19 new ICU admissions, and seven new deaths. Gov. Gary R. Herbert released the following statement: "Unfortunately, today's record high case numbers are not surprising, and if projections out of the Utah Department of Health are correct, we will see much higher numbers in the coming weeks. But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep." Robert Frost Lighter SideSafehouseWorking on Capitol Hill, my husband was under constant pressure. After one late-night session, he came home exhausted and went straight to bed. When I turned out the light, he sat up in a panic. "Is everything OK in the house?" he asked. "Yes, honey," I answered. "I locked the doors and turned down the heat." "That's good," he said, lying back down, his eyelids heavy. "What about the Senate?"
