Why Utah ranks high for senior health in new report

The 2025 Senior Health Report by United Health Foundation listed Utah as No. 4 for senior health, but there are still challenges.

For older adults, Utah is the very best on several measures: risk of social isolation, volunteering, use of hospice care at end of life, not smoking and not drinking excessively.

But the report also noted persistent mental and behavioral health challenges for older American adults. Drug-related deaths (both prescription and not) have increased, as have suicides. Poverty is up, while falls and obesity have remained the same in recent years.

Lois M. Collins spoke with several health experts and Utah seniors on what people can do to stay physically and mentally healthy as they age. The consensus? Staying active, connected and engaged make all the difference in enhancing your later years.

Astra Tower is Utah's tallest building — and has its cleanest air

Astra Towers’ architects didn’t intend to break the record for Utah’s tallest building; it just turned out that way.

What they did intend was to create a building committed to clean air — and in a city often plagued by inversion and smoggy air, that might stand out even more than its height.

Astra Tower, an upscale apartment building with 377 units, soars 451 feet into the city sky — 29 feet higher than the Wells Fargo Center and 31 feet higher than the Church Office Building, Lee Benson reports.

The building’s clean air features include hospital-grade air filters and a central air intake system, which bypasses any sediment that might be picked up in corridors and carpets.

Its most visible feature is an air quality beacon on top of the building — a shining light that changes colors based on the next day’s air quality prediction.

Read more about how the Astra’s architects hope its conservancy measures will raise public awareness.
