Vaccination programme hits a bump in the road

Good evening

After it all seemed to be going so well, it appears there is a bump in the road of the Covid vaccination roll-out.

The Government has admitted that it is to pause the programme for those under 50 so that everyone over 50 gets their second dose within the specified 12-week period.

This is because of a hold-up in the vaccine supply, possibly from India, which means there simply won’t be enough to go around if we start the next cohort before all of those who have currently received one jab get their second.

Not surprisingly, this is making those in the 35-50 age group somewhat grumpy. They are not most at risk, but also not in that 18-30 hardly-any-risk group. And if we need a vaccine passport to go abroad, where does that leave family holidays?

But it is also those of us over 50 who will suffer if this is more than a pause.

It will mean the virus is still circulating and transmitting amongst the general population. That is a worry in itself. But could it also mean that the lockdown ‘roadmap’ ends up being paused too?

Let’s hope that is not the case.
