Groth named 'Staff Member of the Quarter' Irene Groth, administrative assistant/certification officer in the School of Education and Graduate Studies, was recently named Staff Member of the Quarter.
Groth received a host of nominations for the award, all noting her strong work ethic, dedication to SEGS and VCSU, and her willingness to help wherever needed.
One nomination read, in part, "Irene is always smiling and helpful. She will stop whatever she is doing to help a new faculty member... Irene keeps our department running smoothly."
Congratulations, Irene! DaVinha to give lecture Oct. 19 The Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series Season 19 Presents: Luis da Vinha, Ph.D., “Geographic Mental Maps and Foreign Policy Change: Re-mapping the Carter Doctrine” at 7 p.m., Oct. 19, at the Barnes County Museum.
Da Vinha will talk about different models of policy-making, presenting the key issues in his new book: "Geographic Mental Maps and Foreign Policy Change: Re-mapping the Carter Doctrine." He will present the general argument and findings for about 20 minutes and then will be open for any questions or comments.
Luis da Vinha holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from the School of Economics of the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and M.A. in Geography from the School of Humanities of the University of Coimbra. Currently, Luis is an assistant professor of geography and political science at Valley City State University. Previously, Luis was the Head of the Geographic Information Bureau of the City of Coimbra (Portugal) and the Local Dissemination Manager for the European project CIVITAS Modern.
All Lectures are at the Barnes County Historical Society Museum and held in conjunction with Valley City State University. They are free and open to the public. For more information contact Wes Anderson at 701-845-0966. Public planetarium show Oct. 21 A planetarium show is planned for Oct. 21 at 1 p.m. in Rhoades Science Center, room 309.
The featured show, "Navigating with Lewis and Clark," is a program explaining how Lewis and Clark used astronomy to navigate and map the Louisiana Purchase to remarkable accuracy. This program, suitable for grade four and above, lasts about 40 minutes.
The show is open to the public free of charge but donations are always welcome. Elevator access to the planetarium is available at the west entrance doors. Viking sports update Football Saturday: VCSU 58, Mayville State 0 The Vikings rolled in their Homecoming football game, defeating Mayville State by a score of 58-0. VCSU is now 3-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.
Volleyball Wednesday: VCSU 3, Dakota State 2 Viking Volleyball went 1-0 this week, winning a five-set thriller against Dakota State University. The Vikings improved to 11-9 overall and 5-4 in conference play.
Men’s Basketball Sunday: VCSU 82, Brandon University 69 VCSU men’s basketball opened the season Sunday with an 82-69 victory against Brandon University. VCSU goes to 1-0 on the years.
