Tickets still available for upcoming scholarship auction Tickets are still available for the 24th annual VCSU Scholarship Auction. The tickets are $45 each, which includes admission, two beverage tickets, a full buffet dinner and five chances to win $100 (need not be present to win). The event will take place this Friday, April 20, at the Eagles Club in Valley City.The social/silent auction will begin at 5 p.m. The buffet dinner will be served at 6 p.m. followed by the live auction at 7 p.m. The Scholarship Auction is a collaborative effort of the VCSU Booster Board and V-500 Board. All proceeds from the event are split 50/50 to V-500 and Century Club scholarships. Last year a total of 450 tickets were sold, and auction proceeds exceeded $80,000. Milender-Toppen to speak on generational diversity Thursday night Susan Milender-Toppen, family and community wellness agent for NDSU Extension Barnes County, will speak on “Generational Diversity in the Workplace and Community” at the Barnes County Museum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 19. Her presentation will focus on the similarities and differences among generations and the resulting impacts. She will provide information and encourage involvement, making the case that working, learning, volunteering and living together can benefit all generations. Milender-Toppen holds a master of education degree from VCSU, along with two undergraduate degrees: one in food and nutrition, and another in corporate and community fitness, both from NDSU. Part of season 19 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series, the event is open to the public free of charge. VCSU singers participate in NATS auditions A group of VCSU singers traveled to Grand Forks to participate in the 2018 North Dakota National Association of Teachers of Singing Auditions on Feb. 6. Through a series of competitive rounds, four students placed: Mikey Meester, third place, Freshmen Men; Joseph Munowenyu, third place, Sophomore Men; and Rochelle Van Bruggen, third place, Junior Women. Angelana Quanbeck, a recent participant in the VCSU Solo Song Symposium and student of Robin Allebach, placed second in Musical Theater, High School Women, and second in Independent Studio, High School Women. Riley Loeks, Kimberly McLagan, Catherine Murphy, and Makayla Woitzel also participated, singing in the auditions for the first time. All the singers are voice students of Robin Allebach, VCSU voice instructor. Burr, Williams attend SHAPE America conference Angie Williams and Diane Burr recently attended the national SHAPE America conference held March 20–24 in Nashville, Tenn. The SHAPE (Society for Health and Physical Education) conference provided an outstanding opportunity for both faculty to learn about the new research and developments in the field. Williams attended a variety of sessions that focused on inclusion, while Burr focused on fitness and technology in the physical education classroom. A highlight of the conference was hearing keynote speaker Stephen Ritz, educator and founder of the Green Bronx Machine. Stricklin receives Busch Award at student activities conference Kari Stricklin, director of the Student Center and student activities, received the the Robert W. Busch Award at the National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) Northern Plains Region regional conference held April 5–7, 2018, in St. Paul, Minn. The Robert W. Busch Award, one of the region’s highest honors, recognizes a person for outstanding contributions to the field of campus activities and their years of service to NACA. VanHorn attends communication conference in Milwaukee Shannon VanHorn, Ph.D., professor in the School of Education and Graduate Studies, attended the Central States Communication Association Conference (CSCA) in Milwaukee, Wis., April 5–7. While there, she participated in a task force, organized by the CSCA president, exploring economic issues in higher education and setting the agenda for resources and advocacy for members. Other task force members are from Western Kentucky University, Ohio University, Texas A & M, the University of Northern Iowa, Ohio Northern University and the National Communication Association. In addition, VanHorn presented on two panels: “State Communication Associations: Meeting the Challenges” and the North Dakota Spotlight Panel “Teaching Privilege to Midwestern Students.” She also attended panels on creating agency and rigor in classrooms and open pedagogy in courses. CSCA is an academic organization of communication professionals from more than 13 Midwest states, including college and university professors, students, and K-12 educators. The organization has grown to become the largest regional communication in the United States and the fourth largest academic communication association in the world. Hill presents at Midwest computing conference Curt Hill, professor in the Computer Systems and Software Engineering Department, presented a paper titled “Visualizing Live Data Structures” at the Midwest Instructional and Computing Conference held at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth April 6–7. Viking sports update Baseball Thursday: VCSU 12, Dakota State 0; Dakota State 7, VCSU 5 Friday: VCSU 14, Dakota State 4; VCSU 6, Dakota State 3 Valley City State’s baseball team went 3-1 this past week during a series against Dakota State. The Vikings are now 12-20 overall and 6-8 in the North Star Athletic Association. Softball Sunday: Dakota State 2, VCSU 1; VCSU 5, Dakota State 3 The Viking softball team split a doubleheader with Dakota State Sunday. The two teams play again Monday in Aberdeen, S.D. VCSU is currently 28-9 overall and 11-4 in the NSAA. Track & Field Ben Novak won the men’s long jump and Allyssa Weitkum broke a 42-year-old school record in the 800 meter run as the Viking track and field teams competed Thursday as the Sioux City Relays. For complete results, visit www.vcsuvikings.com/article/2999. Golf Valley City State competed at the 18-hole Bent Tree Intercollegiate Golf Meet on Friday in Iowa. It was VCSU’s first meet of the season. The Viking men took second of two teams, while the women were fourth of four teams.
