Gaffner and Roney receive ‘Student Employee of the Month’ awards Rose Gaffner, student admin for the Learning Center, and Brittney Roney, student employee for the Business Office have been named “Student Employee of the Month” for Sept. 2018. Gaffner's nomination read, “She is a strong advocate for the CAVE, the Learning Center, tutors, students who need tutoring and the broader university. She prepared registration folders and found new and more efficient ways of preparing materials for registration. She worked collaboratively with Jodi Shorma, faculty and others who participated in registration.” Roney's nomination read, “Brittany is always watching for new ways to help us become more efficient. When we give her projects or tasks we know they are executed in a timely manner and correctly. She doesn’t just do, she thinks about the whole picture and always asks intelligent questions when she sees things that don’t fit the normal. Her attention to detail has saved us hours of corrections later.” Congratulations, Rose and Brittany! Gjovik, Pritchert honored with Certificate of Merit awards Among the seven alumni honored with Certificate of Merit awards at the Alumni Association’s Honor Breakfast Saturday were Peder Gjovik ’77, associate professor and chair of the VCSU Department of Technology, and Marcia (Knutson) Pritchert ’91, director for financial aid at VCSU. Congratulations, Pete and Marcia. As the Norwegian-American Gjovik said in the mother tongue Saturday, “Det er en flott dag å være en viking!” (It’s a great day to be a Viking!) Ferguson named ‘Staff Member of the Quarter’ Ben Ferguson, systems specialist for the Allen Memorial Library, was recently named “Staff Member of the Quarter.” His nomination read, in part, “He has always been willing to step in and help in all areas, even when they aren't part of his standard job, and gladly takes on new challenges. This past spring, he stepped out of his comfort zone and into the classroom, offering information literacy sessions while we were searching for a new user services librarian.” Congratulations, Ben! Russi designs sound for GameChanger Festival theatre production Jenni Lou Russi, associate professor of communication arts, worked with Theatre B and Humanities North Dakota as sound designer for “A Beautiful Hell,” presented as part of the GameChanger Ideas Festival in Grand Forks on Sept. 7 and in Bismarck Oct. 12. Based on Carol Kapaun Ratchenski’s prose poetry, playwright Laurie J. Baker adapted the published book for the stage in a collaboration with Theatre B. Russi, the most recent VCSU theatre director, continues to work in theatre as a designer, director and actor. Viking sports update Football Saturday: VCSU 24, Waldorf University 21 Landon Arredondo made the game-winning 20-yard field goal with five seconds remaining Saturday, lifting the Vikings to a 24-21 victory. VCSU is now 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the NSAA. The Vikings are in a three-way tie with Waldorf and Dickinson State for first place in the North Star Athletic Association. Volleyball Thursday: VCSU 3, Trinity Bible 0 The Vikings moved back above .500 with a sweep of Trinity Bible College on Thursday. VCSU is now 11-10 overall. The Vikings play at Dickinson State on Monday night in a match that was postponed from Oct. 10. Basketball Valley City State’s basketball teams both begin their seasons at home this weekend. The VCSU men host Brandon University on Friday at 5 p.m. for the season opener.
