Deadline to submit articles (photos encouraged) is 3 p.m. the Friday before publication. Annual Giving Campaign continues Thank you to all faculty and staff who have already donated to the Annual Giving Campaign! We are close to 60 percent of our goal already. We have had some faculty and staff who are very talented donate their artwork to the annual scholarship auction. Please consider a contribution that matches your passion on campus. Oscar Suniga, pictured here in his student days, has a short and sweet “Why I Give” message. A 2018 VCSU graduate, he has started a wonderful habit by making contributions right out of college. Says Oscar, “I give because I know firsthand how much a scholarship can help with a student’s decision to go to college. It may not seem like it, but every little bit helps.” Sign up for VCSU blood drive Nov. 16 The Viking Campus Activities Board is sponsoring a blood drive on Friday, Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Center Skoal Room. To make an appointment to give blood, contact Katie Clark at katie.o.clark@vcsu.edu or Sofia Muruato at sofia.muruato@vcsu.edu. VanHorn presents at National Communication Association conference Shannon VanHorn, Ph.D., attended the National Communication Association (NCA) annual conference, Nov. 7-11, at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. While there, she participated in NCA’s Executive Committee meeting as chair of the Teaching and Learning Council, met with the Teaching and Learning Council, and represented this council at the organization’s Legislative Assembly and at the Doctoral Education Committee meeting. The theme of the conference was “Communication at Play.” Under that theme, she presented in three panels: Active Learning at Play: Student Engagement in the Online Class; Incivility Towards Women in the Academy: Case Studies on What to Do When People Don’t Play Nice; and Employing Technology to Integrate Learner Voice in the Classroom. She also participated in the Career Fair as a CV consultant, working with new scholars in creating or revising their curriculum vitae. She also was on the conference’s planning committee and organized three sessions on Teachers on Teaching, where students of well-known and published scholars in the academic community discuss the impact of that scholar on their life, and in turn, the scholar is present to discuss his or her teaching philosophies. NCA, dedicated to fostering and promoting free and ethical communication, serves more than 7,000 member scholars, teachers and practitioners by enabling and supporting their professional interests in research and teaching.
