Milender Toppen to cover topic of coffee Thursday night at museum Susan Milender Toppen, family and community wellness agent for NDSU Extension Barnes County, will speak on “Uffda! Is Coffee Good for Me?” at the Barnes County Museum at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 17. Having a cup or two (or more) of coffee daily is common for many adults. Is coffee good for you or should you avoid it? This lesson explores the history of coffee, effects of caffeine, health aspects of coffee based on recent research, and preparation methods. Milender Toppen holds a master of education degree from VCSU, along with two undergraduate degrees: one in food and nutrition, and another in corporate and community fitness, both from NDSU. Part of season 20 of the Barnes County Historical Society Lecture Series, the event is open to the public free of charge. District 24 Legislative Forum to be held Saturday at high school cafeteria The first District 24 Legislative Forum of the 2019 Legislative Session will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9-11 a.m. in the Valley City High School cafeteria. Come and hear reports on activity in Bismarck from District 24 legislators as the legislature finishes its second full week of hearings. The event is supported by the Valley City Chamber of Commerce Sign up for MLK Day of Service, Jan. 21 Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to participate in community service projects for Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 21. Individuals may sign up for shifts from 9 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. or 12:30 - 3:30 p.m. In the past, volunteers have contributed in many ways, from Meals on Wheels to cleaning and painting around town. Jan. 25 reception to honor Egeberg The VCSU Student Affairs Division will host a reception for Pat Egeberg, former Student Health Services director, on Friday, Jan. 25, from 2-4 p.m. in the Student Center upper lounge. Pat retired Dec. 31, 2018, after nearly 27 years of service to VCSU. A short program recognizing Pat’s contributions will be presented at 3 p.m. Nominations for faculty excellence awards due Feb. 1 VCSU provides Faculty Excellence Awards to full time and adjunct faculty who show exceptional dedication and commitment to students and the university by outstanding teaching, scholarly activities, or university service. The institution will give a monetary award to three recipients: one senior faculty (associate or full professor), one junior faculty (instructor or assistant professor) and one adjunct or special appointment faculty. The president of VCSU will announce the recipients in early May of the academic year. Faculty and/or supervisors should submit nomination forms to the chair of the Faculty Advocacy Committee, through the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, (academic.affairs@vcsu.edu) by Feb. 1 using form AA-19 - Faculty Award of Excellence Nomination. Woehl attends psychology teaching conference Katie Woehl, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, attended the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology in St. Pete Beach, Fla., January 3–6. Woehl presented a course-sharing poster titled “Statistics and Research Methods: Co-Teaching the Research Process,” co-authored by Emily Fenster, Ph.D., assistant professor of human services. The Vikings are now 7-9 overall and 4-1 in the NSAA. Men’s Basketball Friday: Dakota State 61, VCSU 59 Sunday: Bellevue University 67, VCSU 65 The Valley City State’s men’s basketball team suffered a pair of two-point losses in close games this weekend. VCSU is now 4-12 overall and 1-4 in the NSAA. Track & Field The Valley City State track & field team competed Saturday at the NDSU Thundering Herd Classic in Fargo.
