Lions fight hard, but can't catch up |
It took an MVP-caliber quarterback playing lights out, but Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills snapped the Detroit Lions’ franchise-record 11-game winning streak. The Lions (12-2) lost the shootout between Super Bowl contenders, 48-42. It felt like another injury-filled game as Khalil Dorsey was carted off after suffering a nasty-looking injury late in the second quarter. Fellow Lions cornerback Carlton Davis III was also ruled out but with a jaw injury. Then, stud defensive lineman Alim McNeill was ruled out with a knee injury late in the third quarter. Lions fans didn't need another reason to be upset, as season ticket holders took to social media in droves last week to report steep price hikes for their 2025 renewals. Lions president Rod Wood said in the offseason that the Lions’ ticket price increases have brought the team closer to the league average and that the franchise still has a high renewal rate despite the ticket price increases. |

Very active weather pattern for Michigan over next week, but more snow? |
When we look at the storm track over the next week or so there are a lot of storm systems lined up across the U.S. and Pacific Ocean. Most of these storm systems are going to roll through the Great Lakes region and Michigan. Will they bring rain or snow? Let’s take a look. The storm track this week will have batches of precipitation every two days. Tuesday looks like rain, not snow. There may be snow for some Wednesday. Next weekend’s weather system looks more like a winter system. Season snow total: One of Michigan’s snowiest cities is already just a few inches shy of last year’s entire winter snowfall. Here’s a look at how much snow has already fallen across Michigan. Look around: Birdwatchers will have the chance to see an eruption of color as several species of finches irrupt into Michigan this winter. |

House Republicans walk out of session in hopes of forcing action on tipped wages |
Wanting change: House Republicans walked out of the chamber during Friday afternoon’s session. They are vowing not to vote on proposed bills until Democrats take up legislation to stop an impending minimum wage hike to $15 and a removal of the sub-minimum wage for tipped workers. To know: The Family Leave Optimal Coverage plan (FLOC), which passed out of a Senate committee last week, would allow Michigan employees to take up to 12 weeks of paid family or medical leave in a year. By 79 votes: A recount to decide the winner of a Michigan House race is complete and Republican candidate Steve Frisbie won by a small margin, flipping the district from blue to red, election officials said. |

More big power line projects coming to Michigan under massive $22B rollout |
On the grid that whisks electricity across the region, Michigan is about to get the equivalent of several new interstate highways. Leadership of the regional grid operator covering 15 states greenlit a second phase of Midwestern high-voltage power line rollouts totaling nearly $22 billion on Thursday, including three new projects crossing the Great Lakes State. Clean energy advocates hailed the transmission buildout as a win for power customers that will save them money in the long term. In court: A former Adrian College women’s hockey player is suing a Michigan State University rival for what she called a violent, banned bodycheck that caused her to hit the ice and lose consciousness. |

Ferris State football pitches second-half shutout to reach D2 national title game |
Let the victory bell ring: Ferris State Bulldogs football is headed to the NCAA Division 2 national championship after completing an impressive comeback against Slippery Rock, 48-38, in a semifinals game on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024 at Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids. In hockey: The Detroit Red Wings got offense from one of the most unlikely sources Saturday as Jeff Petry scored two goals to lift them to a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Little Caesars Arena. Spartan Stadium will look different by the start of the 2025 season and its long-term future will start to be planned. Michigan State’s Board of Trustees on Friday voted unanimously to approve $28 million in renovations, along with a plan to modernize the century-old home of Spartan football. |

Where did the ‘ugly sweater party’ originate? The story starts in Michigan. |
True origins: A couple Canadians have long claimed to host the first “ugly Christmas sweater party” in 2002 in Vancouver. However, a group of Western Michigan University alumni claim they began hosting such parties in Kalamazoo in 2000. And they have receipts. Winner: The best New Year’s Eve ball drop isn’t in New York City’s Times Square, according to USA Today readers. It’s in Northern Michigan. Ludington was the only Michigan destination included among 20 contenders for the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice award for “Best New Year’s Eve Ball Drop.” The small, Up North town came out on top. Festive fun: It’s a little taste of Vegas in Michigan as Cirque du Soleil brings some holiday cheer for all ages just in time for Christmas. “Twas the Night Before” is Cirque’s first-ever holiday production. The show will be at the Fox Theatre in downtown Detroit from Friday, December 20 through Tuesday, December 31 with afternoon and evening shows most days. |
