Dear John,
An institution's general education curriculum can make up about one-third of a student's undergraduate experience, yet rarely does gen ed receive the attention or respect it deserves. If students and faculty aren't excited and invigorated by your gen ed curriculum, or it feels obligatory and monotonous, it's time for a redesign.
The Chronicle's new issue brief, Reforming Gen Ed: Strategies for Success on Your Campus, explores why gen ed programs must be continually updated, addresses which stakeholders should be included in the process, and offers strategies to ensure your curriculum revamp is meaningful and effective.
- Assess your institution's readiness and expectations for gen ed reform
- Set appropriate goals and get buy-in from key roles and departments
- Develop the right strategy for your campus
- Identify potential obstacles and conflict that may surface during the process
Sincerely, Liz
