Voters supported progressive policies on ballot initiatives. Republicans are pushing back.
After facing defeats at the ballot box on issues such as minimum wage, Medicaid expansion and marijuana legalization, a handful of Republican-led legislatures have pushed to amend the referendum process. And these efforts are increasing: More than 125 bills have been introduced this year to amend or change the process that has recently favored progressive policies. Republicans' desire to "hold onto power," one advocate says, "should terrify all of us."
