In the history of court trials, there are plenty of unique legal defenses — but we’re pretty sure this is one of the first coronavirus defenses. An Alabama police officer on trial for corruption caused a disturbance in the courtroom when his lawyer proclaimed the officer couldn’t make it to a hearing thanks to the novel coronavirus. At first, both judge and jury were shocked but a surprise Sunday testimony proved the officer wasn’t being entirely truthful. Though he had checked into the hospital for a respiratory illness, he did not have coronavirus and was promptly condemned by the judge. The officer’s lawyer played innocent, claiming he didn’t know there were multiple kinds of coronaviruses. It was a bold strategy to be sure, but not one that would get you out of trouble. Though, due to the current news climate, it might just get you out of jury duty.

But seriously, don’t lie about having the virus. Especially when we’re on the verge of a pandemic.
