Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Chris Wallace

Fox News’ Chris Wallace pressed Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Sunday, questioning the consistency of his responses to sexual abuse allegations at migrant detainment facilities under the presidencies of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump.

Wallace quoted a statement from Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), a non-profit organization, that said “The only reason why Abbott is now acting like he cares about the children in these facilities is for political reasons.”

"Governor, there were thousands of complaints of sexual abuse at migrant shelters during the Trump years.” Wallace said. “Not to say that what’s going on now is right, but we couldn’t find one instance of you complaining and calling that out when President Trump was president."

Also on Sunday, Wallace put Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg through the wringer for his false claims about the jobs benefits from the so-called infrastructure plan.

“So it doesn’t, as you said last Sunday, create 19 million jobs,” Wallace said Buttigieg. “Why mislead folks?”

"Would you agree that you and the president and Brian Deese, the economic adviser on this program last week, you all exaggerated the jobs impact?” Wallace asked as the segment continued. “You’re the one who recited Moody’s Analytics as 19 million, and it’s actually 2.7 million, which is a bunch, but it’s not what you said.”

Questioning both parties, holding them to account for their words. You know: journalism.

MEDIA LOSER:
Tucker Carlson

The head of the Anti-Defamation League, Jonathan Greenblatt, appeared on CNN Sunday to say that Tucker Carlson needs to go.

During a segment about immigration with Mark Steyn last week, Carlson said that Democrats are trying to "replace the current electorate, the voters now casting ballots, with new people, more obedient voters from the Third World," among other things.

The ADL sent a letter to Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott on Friday calling on the network to fire Carlson. over the "antisemitic, racist and toxic" commentary. Late Friday night, the Daily Show put out an absolutely brutal montage of Carlson saying things on air, captioned with similar quotes from white supremacist mass shooters.

On Sunday's appearance with Brian Stelter, ADL's Greenblatt tore into Carlson. "As you pointed out, Tucker Carlson has a history of sanitizing stereotypes and of spreading this kind of poison," he said to Stelter. He even suggested advertisers should take action if the network doesn't.

Carlson has long pushed the theory that Democrats support immigration because they are trying to replace real Americans with lesser people. His critics have often accused him of parroting the rhetoric of white supremacists. Now we have Carlson close to embracing that charge -- though insisting, unconvincingly, that the theory is not founded in any racism. It's a nauseating argument, and one that earned him well-founded rebuke by the ADL.

"Tucker has got to go," said the ADL's Greenblatt on Sunday, capping off a bad weekend for the Fox host.

The A-Block

'Lucifer In the Flesh'

Former House Speaker John Boehner continues the promotional tour of his new memoir of On the House with a convivial appearance on The View and quadrupled down on his criticism of Senator Ted Cruz of Texas — referring to him as “Lucifer.”

The comment came at the end of a segment in which Boehner was asked to opine on some current Republican members of Congress. Joy Behar asked if much-maligned Matt Gaetz would still be in Congress if Boehner were still House Speaker.

Boehner noted a past pledge he had made to his Congressional colleagues that he wouldn’t tolerate bad behavior, the former Speaker said that Gaetz “would have been in my office several times answering questions from me about his activities.” He then added “In America, people are innocent until proven guilty. The man hasn’t even been charged yet.”

“You aren’t shy about your animosity for senator Ted Cruz, but you take it to the next level in the book writing,” said co-host Sara Haines, asking "What is it about Cruz that gets you so fired up?”

And Boehner answered...

'Just dare them to come at me'

A teacher in California was caught on Zoom scolding her students over the prospect of holding in-door classes.

if your parent wants to come talk to me about how I’m not doing a good enough job in distance learning based on what you need as an individual? Just dare them to come at me,” Piro added. “Because I am so sick to my stomach of parents trying to tell educators how to do their job.”

The video was recorded a few months ago, but only just came to light.

It's... really something.
