Our minibuses are already working hard out! The minibuses have come into their own this week ferrying Pod 8 students back and forth to the swimming pool. They are a great asset for the school. |

Thank You Thank you to everyone who turned up to our Welcome Back to 2020 evening last Thursday. There was a lovely atmosphere and the children enjoyed sharing their Jump Jam routines with you.
Parent Voice Meetings Our next meeting for parents and teachers is planned for Wednesday 11th March and Thursday 12th March from 3.30 to 5.30pm. These are called Parent Voice Meetings as we hope that all parents will share their knowledge of their own child with the teachers. Teachers will use what you have to say as good background for developing the learning relationship with your child. The parents do the talking and the teachers will listen and take in key information. To help with this, we have provided some prompt questions to support you with this - click here.
What's Happening At School Children have settled quickly into classes over the last week and we are well underway with the core programmes and swimming lessons (and our minivans make it so easy to get to and from the pool).
On Monday 9th March, an ice-skating rink is being set up in our school hall and over the next 4 days children will each have a skating lesson. These lessons are being paid for by the activity fee - please ensure this has been paid. There will also be public sessions each afternoon, a disco on Friday evening and open to the public 10am-5pm on both Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th March (check out the advertisement later in the newsletter). A portion of the funds raised through these after school community sessions will be donated to the school. We are looking for 12 helpers to help put up the rink on Monday 9th March at 6pm, and 12 helpers to help take it down on Sunday 15th at 5pm. If you can help please let the school office know.
Tribe Day is next week on Friday 6th March and is now part of our 'Whacky Wheels and Funky Feet Day' - so bikes as well as children are invited to come along dressed in their Tribe colours. There will be a walking display of all the wheels and feet that come along at 9.15am, in the courtyard area. Parents are welcome to come along to view what is usually a colourful spectacle.
Our junior children have been practising their safe walking and bus children have had their bus skills honed and we are encouraging all students to aim for active transport to school even if it is only for part of the way.
Teacher Only Day A reminder that MONDAY 16TH MARCH is TEACHER ONLY DAY and school is closed for instruction. This is to enable us to work with external facilitators furthering our knowledge of precision pedagogy around Deep Learning. Our Teacher Only Day involves staff from our local schools - both Wānaka Primary School and Take Kārara are closed to allow all staff to attend this day, whereas only the lead teams from The Holy Family and Hawea Flat Schools will be attending as they have other Teacher Only Days organised this term. |

WPS Senior Athletics Day (Years 4-6) Tuesday 3rd March (PP - Thursday 5th March)
With a year's hiatus because of sport event rescheduling, we are looking forward to holding our Senior Athletics event next Tuesday.
All students in years four to six will have the opportunity to participate in the following events: Throws: shot put, discus and vortex Running: sprints (60m for year four and five - 75m for year six), 800m and 60m hurdles Jumps: high jump and long jump Students will be asked this week to opt to participate either in the non-competitive or competitive division.
The competitive division will allow for: competing for individual and overall placings in their year groups eligibility for qualification to the Upper Clutha event (all events except vortex) The non-competitive athletes will have a participation focus while earning points for their tribes. Please talk to your children to help them decide which division they would prefer to take part in.
Because of the large number of children taking part, we are not able to hold all events on Tuesday. The 800m and discus events will be held on Wednesday.
We have decided to hold the high jump, vortex and running events at Kelly's Flat. The other events will be on the school field.
All children will need to wear trainers (closed shoes are compulsory for the throws) and we will encourage them to dress in tribe colours. Water bottles, plenty of lunch and snacks, hats and sunscreen are all a must too. Spike shoes are not permitted.
The weather forecast is looking good at this stage, but if it is postponed, notification will be given on Radio Wānaka and placed on the school website and app by 8am.
Can you help? To help run the event as time efficiently as possible we would appreciate offers of parent help. If you are able to offer an hour or two, please could you contact me on kathn@wanaka.school.nz.
Alternatively, while watching your child(ren) take part, please let teachers know if you are happy to roll back shot puts, rake the long jump pit or put a high jump bar in place, etc. Thank you!
Please come along to enjoy watching and supporting your children participate, but we ask you to respect our policy for school events by not bringing dogs.

Walk n Wheel Walk n Wheel is an annual week-long event used to 'kick start' Active Transport for the school year.
Walk n Wheel aims to: Promote and encourage Active Transport amongst Otago primary, intermediate and college school kids. Get kids, parents and schools thinking about Active Transport. How Walk n Wheel works: Walk n Wheel Week runs in the first school term of each year with Walk n Wheel week for 2020 taking place from 24th February to 28th February. During the week kids are encouraged to either walk, bike or scoot to school. Walk n Wheel Day is a day where extra emphasis is placed on Active Transport and schools strive to get as many students and staff as possible to choose an Active Transport option. |

Ice Skate Tour will be setting up an ice rink in the school hall in week 6 - 10th to 15th March. School lessons will take place during the week (the school activity fee covers the cost of the lessons) and the rink will also be open to the public each afternoon - schedule and costs below.

Wānaka Trail Ride - Saturday 28th March The Wānaka Trail Ride organising crew would like to greet all parents and caregivers for 2020 and extend a welcome to all the new families at Wānaka Primary School.
A major fundraiser for our school, the Wānaka Trail Ride is now in its sixth year. We collaborate with Montessori Children’s House Wānaka to make this massive event the success that it is, with thousands of dollars raised each year and over $140,000 raised in total.
It’s 100% volunteer driven so we absolutely need your help. Roles are varied to suit a range of skills and availability and zero knowledge of trail rides is required (basically dirt bikes and awesome scenery). What is required is willingness to sign up for something and give it a go. Roles aren’t limited to the day itself, and the time commitment is varied too. There’s something for everyone with roles including parking, registration, marshaling, track set up and break down, catering, and baking. Have a browse on the website and find something that suits you via this link to the volunteer database.
WTR Role Profile – Catering Some would say THIS is the most important role of the day! The catering tent is a central hub at the base paddock as the volunteer team ensure the hungry riders are well fed and recharged to hit the trails again. You get a really nice feeling here as you meet the riders after they’ve been blasting it out on the tracks: they’re having an awesome time and they’re happy (so it makes you feel good too). Here’s what one volunteer had to say “The vibe in the pumping base paddock was brilliant – the riders were just so excited to be there!”
Volunteering in the catering tent is a pretty social time with varied tasks, so if manning the BBQ isn’t your thing, there are other roles including bap and burger prep, taking the orders and money, and dish washing.

Wānaka Primary Netball Registrations are now open for all girls and boys keen to play netball. The competition runs for all of term 2 on Saturday mornings at the Wānaka Recreation Centre. Players play in either a year 3/4 or year 5/6 team. Please register your keen netballer via this link: https://www.sporty.co.nz/wanakaprimaryschool/.
Registrations close on Thursday 19th March 2020 and there will be absolutely no late registrations accepted this year.

Wānaka A&P Show The Wānaka A&P Show is just around the corner and promises two full days of family fun! The 'Kids Play Zone', classic carnival rides, live cooking demonstrations in the Life & Style marquee and the world-famous Jack Russell race all make a return for 2020. Children’s entertainer Suzy Cato, Magic Guy Wayne McEwan, and the New Zealand Army Band will also take the stage.
Make life easy by using the free Park 'n Ride and enjoy free sunblock, water and a Plunket tent with baby facilities on site at the Show. Tickets can be purchased online at www.wanakashow.co.nz or at the gate for $17.50 per adult and $5 per youth (13-17 years) per day. Children aged 12 and under are free.
The cheapest way to enjoy the Show is with a Family Membership to the Upper Clutha A&P Society - a $60 Family Membership includes 4 tickets to the Show - instead of paying $90 for two adults and two children (aged 13-17).
