Scholastic Book Fair Monday 25th - Friday 29th November
The Scholastic Book Fair is back for the whole week starting
Monday 25th November in our school library.
Last year our school had the second highest sales in NZ!!!!
That means that we got a huge rebate from Scholastic
to put back into books for our school. THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO DO SOME PRE-CHRISTMAS SHOPPING Mark it on your calendars now! |

Welcome Back to Term 4 Welcome back to term 4 to returning families and also to a number of new families. The term has started off with a happy, synergetic buzz both in the playground and in the pods. We have a fabulous term ahead packed with camps, EOTC activities, swimming, panto, Kapahaka Festival, a visit from Eugenie Sage to hear about Pod 3's Eel Deep Learning work, an orchestra and much more. Phew it will be Christmas in no time.
Sunhats are Compulsory in Term 4 Please remember to send your child along to school with a NAMED brimmed sun hat (no caps - neck and face need to be covered). It does not need to be a WPS hat - it can be floral or brightly coloured so your child can spot it in an instant. Children who do not have a sun hat will be asked to play in the shade.
Also a reminder particularly to our senior students that full school uniform, worn with respect, is expected everyday. If an article of the uniform is unable to be worn on a particular day we will be expecting a note or email from parents.
Year 6 Drama Club Panto Lead actors have all been assigned their parts and will be practising for the panto at lunchtimes over the next 3-4 weeks. Mel started working with the dance groups today. If your Year 6 child is interested in being in the panto as a supporting actor, a dancer or a singer, encourage them to come along to a lunchtime practice in the hall.
THE PANTO PERFORMANCE DATES are as follows: Tuesday 10th December - Dress Rehearsal Wednesday 11th December - Matinee Performance 1-3pm Thursday 12th December - 6pm Performance Enrolment Intentions for 2020 THANK YOU for completing the survey asking about your enrolment intentions for 2020. And thank you to people who expressed their passion for Wanaka Primary School and appreciation of the great team we have. This survey only gives us a rough idea of numbers for next year and we will sort our staffing accordingly. We cannot be sure about what will happen over the holidays, as we still have new families moving into the area and some undecided about next year, we will not be organising students into class groups at the end of this year as we normally do. We have been allocated a generous level of staffing for next year by the Ministry so we can be very innovative in what we do. I am also assured that the Board will continue to fund our Learning Support and extension programmes next year. We are looking forward to the exciting opportunities 2020 will bring. And in the mean time we will all have an awesome term 4!
End of Year Reporting Please mark Wednesday 4th December on your calendars as we have planned an interactive reporting format instead of just written reports. One of these sessions will be 1.30-3.30pm and for those who can not make this time there will be a 5-6pm session as well. The new format will involve children themselves showing you the evidence of their learning across different learning areas. More information about what this could look like will be sent out later in the week with the opportunity for you to feedback. |

Volunteers wanted for our Garden to Table programme Our school has joined the Garden to Table programme. This is a unique and inspiring programme teaching our children how to grow and harvest produce grown in the school garden, which will then be prepared and shared in the school kitchen.
This project relies on the support of volunteers to work with children. This term, during lunchtimes we need help in the garden, growing produce that we can use later in the kitchen.
You don’t have to be an expert! You just need to be interested in helping children learn about growing food and enjoy working with children.

Keep NZ Beautiful Clean-Up On Monday the 9th September, 59 students from Pod 8 took part in this years Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean-Up Week organised by our local GJ Gardner Homes team. For the second year in a row our students headed out to collect rubbish and litter from the Wanaka Marina all the way along the lake and through the Eely Point Reserve to Bremner Bay. The Pod 8 students, with the highly appreciated help of a dozen parents, collected a whole skip full of rubbish, including some unusual items like an old pair of skis, a car tyre and several wooden pallets. Everyone was very happy with the success of the rubbish collection and the whole group enjoyed a sausage sizzle afterwards. As an additional recognition, the Wanaka clean-up event was chosen the 'Best Clean-Up' nationwide. A big thank you to all students and parent helpers involved as well as the GJ Gardner staff for organising this event and their help and support on the day. |

Room 20's Amazing Poetry Room 20 had a mini poetry competition where everyone wrote poems on the theme 'My Place'. The 6 poems below were the favourites and they have been entered in the 'School For Young Writers My Place Poem Competition'. |

Exciting Library News We now have an eBook library using the ePlatform from Wheelers books. This is available to all children from Wanaka Primary School and can be downloaded onto any device including Kobo and Kindle as long as they have a browser. This is available through the holidays and the extended summer break. Dyslexic font can be applied which is a huge bonus. Nathan Wallis 'Understanding your Brain' Wednesday 16th October Parenting and child psychology expert, Nathan Wallis will be in Wanaka on the evening of Wednesday 16th October to share his talk "understanding your brain". Tickets are selling fast, and spaces are limited.
Nathan's presentation is about the structure of your brain and how it impacts on everything you say and do. With over 250 presentations each year under his belt, Nathan has developed a reputation as a lively and engaging speaker who uses humour and plain language to make complex topics come to life.
Nathan says that to understand how this structure develops means re-examining your early life and the first 1,000 days. He strongly believes that the first 1,000 days of your life will shape what kind of person you will turn into, and he has a whole lot of science to back this up. It is his view that this will ultimately impact all of your child’s life-long outcomes.

Upper Clutha Angling Club Take A Kid Fishing Day The annual “TAKE A KID FISHING” day is coming up again on Sunday 3rd November 2019 (if weather permits, otherwise it will be postponed and held on Sunday 10th November).
This annual event is organized by the Upper Clutha Angling Club together with Fish and Game Otago. This year we have use of a large dam near Cromwell that has recently been stocked with several hundred hungry trout. This is a fun day that includes supervised fishing, games, a BBQ, competitions and play. Everything is organised by the Club although assistance with transport would be appreciated. We have some great give a ways and prizes for the casting competitions. To date we have always been able to catch fish!! Parents are welcome to come along and help. There is no cost involved. The event is closely supervised and there is a Health and Safety Plan. This is an event for Primary School age children with a minimum age of 7 years.
We will be targeting trout and perch with very experienced fishermen providing guidance. Please bring sunglasses, sun hat, sun protection and a brightly coloured top to assist in monitoring the children.

Completed authorization forms must be returned to the school office or scanned to the club secretary at the above e-mail address prior to Monday 28th October.
